Challenge

Portland-based Smith Teamaker was awarded a permanent retail space in the new, world-renowned, ZGF Architecture-designed Portland International Airport. The only catch was that their location wouldn’t be ready until the end of phase 2 in 2026. That meant nearly 2 years of lost revenue. As an interim solution, the Port of Portland offered Smith a temporary, limited-space ‘kiosk’ location on the concourse. The structure had to be free-standing–no anchoring to any wall or floor–yet would still have to meet code requirements, presenting unique design, engineering and installation challenges.

Solution

Working closely with our friends at Osmose Design and taking design cues from Smith’s other brick-and-mortar shops, Figure Plant set to work designing, engineering, building, and installing a stunning and efficient temporary retail space that enhances the brand and captures that otherwise lost revenue and exposure.

Results

Nearly 20 million passengers per year pass through PDX. ZGF designed the airport to put visitors at the forefront and reflect Portland’s tree-lined streets, approachable neighborhoods, and local businesses. The new Smith Teamaker retail kiosk fits right in.
