Portland-based Smith Teamaker was awarded a permanent retail space in the new, world-renowned, ZGF Architecture-designed Portland International Airport. The only catch was that their location wouldn’t be ready until the end of phase 2 in 2026. That meant nearly 2 years of lost revenue.
As an interim solution, the Port of Portland offered Smith a temporary, limited-space ‘kiosk’ location on the concourse. The structure had to be free-standing–no anchoring to any wall or floor–yet would still have to meet code requirements, presenting unique design, engineering and installation challenges.
